Baltimore has a way of surprising me. Around one corner, centuries of maritime history linger along the waterfront. Around another, former industrial spaces have taken on vibrant new life, filled with restaurants, galleries, breweries, and ambitious makers who are redefining the city’s identity. That same spirit of renewal led me to Sagamore Spirit Distillery, where Maryland’s long relationship with rye whiskey is being written into a new chapter overlooking the harbor.
The five-acre waterfront campus sits on Baltimore Peninsula, its modern glass, steel, and brick buildings reflecting both the city’s industrial roots and its forward-looking energy. The setting feels purposeful. The air carries hints of saltwater drifting in from the harbor, while inside the distillery another aroma takes over entirely. Warm grain, toasted oak, vanilla, caramel, and spice mingle together, creating the unmistakable scent of whiskey patiently becoming something remarkable. Before a single sip, it is impossible not to appreciate the craft happening all around.
Founded in 2013 by Under Armour Executive Chairman Kevin Plank, Sagamore Spirit was created with an ambitious goal: to revive Maryland’s historic rye whiskey tradition. Long before Kentucky became synonymous with bourbon, Maryland rye enjoyed an outstanding reputation across America. That legacy had largely faded over time, but Sagamore Spirit has embraced the challenge of restoring it through careful craftsmanship, partnerships with local farmers, and an unwavering focus on quality. In 2023, the distillery entered a new era when it became part of Italy’s Illva Saronno Holding, while continuing its commitment to producing exceptional Maryland rye.

A Distillery Built Around Water
One detail repeatedly surfaced throughout my visit, and for good reason. Water matters.
Every bottle is proofed using pure, limestone-filtered spring water transported from Sagamore Farm, about 22 miles away. The historic spring house, originally built in 1909, has become such an important part of the distillery’s identity that every bottle proudly carries the 1909 marker.
It’s a simple story that becomes surprisingly compelling once you hear it explained during the tour. Grain, yeast, barrels, climate, and time all influence whiskey, but the final proofing water shapes the finished spirit in subtle ways. Using the same spring water consistently allows each expression to maintain its intended character.
Walking through the production areas, I gained an appreciation for just how much precision goes into every step. Massive fermentation tanks bubble quietly while gleaming copper stills transform carefully prepared mash into crystal-clear new make spirit. From there, charred American oak barrels begin the slow process of turning raw spirit into richly layered rye whiskey.

Two Mash Bills, Endless Possibilities
One aspect of Sagamore Spirit that fascinated me was its blending philosophy.
Rather than relying on a single mash bill, the distilling team combines two distinctive rye recipes. One is high rye, delivering bold spice and peppery intensity. The other contains less rye, contributing softer fruit notes and gentle sweetness. The balance between these two mash bills becomes the foundation for nearly every whiskey in the lineup.
Watching this process explained made me appreciate blending as an art rather than simply a production step. Tiny adjustments create dramatically different personalities inside the glass.
The result has earned international attention. Sagamore Spirit’s whiskies have collected more than 200 awards, including the coveted title of World’s Best Rye Whiskey at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Touring the Waterfront Distillery
The guided distillery tour lasts about an hour, although it never feels rushed. Every room reveals another part of the whiskey-making process, and the guides clearly enjoy sharing their knowledge without overwhelming visitors with technical details.
Large windows overlook Baltimore’s waterfront, allowing natural light to pour into the production areas. It creates an atmosphere that feels open and inviting rather than industrial.
The barrel warehouse quickly became one of my favorite stops.
Rows upon rows of aging barrels stretch into the distance, each quietly contributing colour, aroma, and flavour over the years. The scent inside is unforgettable. Oak, spice, vanilla, caramel, and alcohol fill the air in a way that photographs can never capture. Every breath reminds visitors that patience remains one of whiskey’s most valuable ingredients.
The tour concludes exactly where most guests hope it will: the tasting room.

The Core Collection
The Core Collection serves as the heart of Sagamore Spirit’s portfolio, offering three distinct expressions that demonstrate the remarkable versatility of Maryland-style rye whiskey. Each begins with the distillery’s signature blend of high-rye and low-rye mash bills, but careful aging, blending, and barrel finishing create whiskies with completely different personalities. Together, they provide an excellent introduction to the craftsmanship that has earned Sagamore Spirit international acclaim.
Sagamore Small Batch Rye Whiskey is the foundation of the collection and an ideal place to begin. Bottled at 93 proof, it pays tribute to Maryland’s historic rye-making traditions while embracing a contemporary style that is smooth, balanced, and approachable. Rich spice is complemented by gentle sweetness, creating a whiskey that is equally enjoyable neat, over ice, or in a well-crafted cocktail. It captures the classic character of Maryland rye while remaining accessible to both newcomers and seasoned whiskey enthusiasts.
For those looking for a bolder experience, Cask Strength Rye Whiskey showcases the complexity that comes from thoughtful blending. Combining straight rye whiskies aged four to seven years, it layers deep notes of chocolate, hazelnut, and molasses with brighter hints of citrus and lively baking spice. Despite its robust 112.2 proof, the whiskey remains remarkably balanced. A small addition of the distillery’s limestone-filtered spring water from the historic 1909 spring house helps bring every flavour into harmony, allowing each sip to unfold with impressive depth and richness.
Double Oak Rye Whiskey takes a different approach altogether. After spending four to five years in heavily charred new American oak barrels, the whiskey is transferred into specially crafted toasted wave stave barrels for another 18 months of maturation. The additional aging transforms the spirit, drawing out luxurious notes of caramel, toffee, hazelnut, and toasted coconut while preserving the signature spice that defines Sagamore’s rye. It is a wonderful example of innovation built upon tradition, producing a whiskey that feels both familiar and entirely distinctive.

The Reserve Series
For those looking to explore beyond Sagamore Spirit’s flagship offerings, the Reserve Series highlights the distillery’s passion for innovation and meticulous craftsmanship. These limited and specialty releases build upon the classic Maryland rye profile while experimenting with extended aging, unique barrel finishes, and traditional production methods. Each bottle tells its own story, revealing new layers of flavour while staying true to the character that defines Sagamore Spirit.
The Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey reflects the distillery’s commitment to authenticity and transparency. Produced entirely in Maryland under the strict standards established by the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, it combines the distillery’s signature high-rye and low-rye mash bills into a whiskey that balances vibrant rye spice with delicate fruit, floral notes, and warm caramel developed during barrel aging. It is a thoughtful expression of Maryland’s whiskey-making heritage, crafted with precision from grain to bottle.
Extended aging takes centre stage in the exceptional 10-Year-Old Rye Whiskey. A decade in new charred American oak barrels creates remarkable depth, revealing aromas of peach crumble, roasted nuts, and molasses cookies before unfolding into rich flavours of crème brûlée, floral honey, and lingering white pepper. It is a whiskey that rewards slow sipping, with each taste revealing another layer of complexity.
The Reserve Series also showcases Sagamore Spirit’s creative approach to barrel finishing. Manhattan Finish Rye Whiskey spends an additional 30 months in vermouth, bitters, and cherry brandy barrels before the individual components are blended together, producing herbaceous aromas, dark cherry, baking spice, and remarkable balance. Equally memorable is the celebrated Port Finish Rye Whiskey, which earned the title of World’s Best Rye Whiskey in 2019. Finished for an additional three years in port barrels from Maryland’s Boordy Vineyards, it delivers generous notes of ripe raspberries, cherries, plums, caramel, dark chocolate, vanilla, and warming spice. Together, these expressions demonstrate how thoughtful experimentation can elevate an already outstanding rye whiskey into something truly distinctive.

Distillery Exclusives
Some bottles can only be experienced at the source, and Sagamore Spirit’s Distillery Exclusive collection gives visitors another reason to linger a little longer. Produced in limited quantities and available only at the Baltimore distillery, these special releases showcase the creativity of the distilling team while highlighting the flexibility of Maryland rye. Each expression offers something entirely different from the core lineup, making a visit to the gift shop almost as rewarding as the tour itself.
The Kingston Hard Cider Cask Finish is a standout example of inventive barrel finishing. After aging for five years, the straight rye whiskey spends more than four additional years in barrels that previously held Maryland Kingston Black hard cider. The extended finishing period creates a whiskey bursting with aromas of orchard blossoms, tropical fruit, and toasted marshmallow, while the palate unfolds with comforting flavours of apple turnovers, vanilla glaze, and cinnamon-dusted walnuts. Beneath those fruit-forward notes, the signature rye spice remains, providing balance and a satisfying finish that reflects both innovation and tradition.
Equally intriguing is the Pot Still Series Rye Malt Whiskey, a release that demonstrates Sagamore Spirit’s willingness to experiment while remaining firmly rooted in Maryland agriculture. Distilled entirely from locally sourced grain and matured in Maryland oak barrels for seven years, this small-batch whiskey reflects the distillers’ curiosity and craftsmanship. Every bottle showcases a different side of the distillery’s talent, proving that Sagamore Spirit is just as committed to exploring new possibilities as it is to preserving the rich heritage of Maryland rye whiskey.

Beyond the Standard Tour
Sagamore Spirit offers far more than traditional distillery visits.
Chocolate lovers can explore guided whiskey and chocolate pairings created alongside ArtEatables, with each handcrafted chocolate designed specifically to complement a particular whiskey.
Cocktail enthusiasts have several opportunities to get behind the bar.
The Classics Cocktail Class dives into iconic whiskey drinks while giving every participant their own bartending station to prepare traditional favourites. Other sessions focus on brunch cocktails or signature house creations, making the experience both educational and entertaining.
These hands-on programs encourage guests to interact with whiskey rather than simply tasting it.

Raising a Glass at Nineteen O’ Nine
No visit feels complete without lingering at Nineteen O’ Nine, the distillery’s inviting whiskey bar.
Named after the historic spring house, the space strikes an ideal balance between sophisticated and comfortable. Bartenders craft expertly prepared Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, seasonal cocktails, and whiskey flights showcasing the distillery’s extensive portfolio.
I settled into a seat overlooking the waterfront with a carefully prepared flight and found myself slowing down in the best possible way.
Outside, visitors gather on the patio and lawn, sipping canned cocktails while boats drift across the harbor. It feels distinctly Baltimore. Relaxed, welcoming, and connected to the water that has shaped the city for generations.

Supporting Maryland From Grain to Glass
One of the most meaningful aspects of Sagamore Spirit extends beyond whiskey itself.
The distillery has built strong partnerships with Maryland farmers, steadily increasing its use of locally grown rye. Supporting regional agriculture strengthens both the local economy and the authenticity of every bottle produced here.
That grain-to-glass philosophy isn’t simply marketing language. It becomes visible throughout the tour, where local sourcing, craftsmanship, and community involvement are presented as essential parts of the distillery’s identity.
Standing on the waterfront before leaving, I found myself reflecting on how much Maryland’s whiskey story has changed in just a few short years. Sagamore Spirit has managed to honour history without becoming trapped by it, embracing innovation while respecting generations of distilling tradition. Every carefully blended expression, every thoughtfully designed visitor experience, and every partnership with local farmers reinforces that commitment.
Long after I left Baltimore, the memory that stayed with me wasn’t just the flavour of an exceptional rye whiskey. It was the feeling of discovering a place where craftsmanship, heritage, and hospitality come together with remarkable confidence. Some distilleries simply produce spirits. Sagamore Spirit has created an experience that lingers well beyond the final sip.
